My poor, poor neglected blog. Blog, I still like you. I like the idea of blogging. It is fun to read other people's blogs.
But I think you need an overhaul.
Details coming later!

Friday 5!
My first Friday 5 in a while! I have been blog negligent lately, but hopefully will get to tending to it soon.
1. What color are your beautiful eyes? Did you inherit them from or pass them on to anyone in your family?
Blue! I got them from Mom, and share them with one sister. No descendants to speak of yet!
2. What color eyes would you choose if you could change them?
I would love a bright green. They always stand out so much. Of course, then I'd have to get rid of my glasses so that anyone could see them!
3. Do you wear glasses or contacts? What kind? Like 'em or hate 'em?
Glasses. Used to wear contacts, but my father went blind in one eye about 10 years ago due to retina problems. Ever since then I decided that I would not be touching my eyes or fooling with them any more than absolutely necessary. Now I am vigilant about sunglasses and eye care. But I miss wearing dramatic eye makeup, but no one can really see it now!
Of course, my favorite pair of glasses got run over by a car a few months ago. So I had to adjust and buy new, dramatic, black framed glasses! Love the new ones.
4. Ever had, or contemplated, laser surgery? Happy with the results?
Nah, with my Dad's eye problems I'm too jumpy to get lasered. But the thought of not wearing glasses anymore does sound nice...
5. Do you like to look people in the eye, or are you more eye-shy?
I like to look them in the eye, but if we catch each other at the same time, I will look away quickly first!
Bonus question: Share a poem, song, or prayer that relates to eyes and seeing.
This one is from the musical version of "The Secret Garden." Archibald and Neville are brothers. Archibald was married to Lily, who died many years in childbirth. Here they both sing about Lily....listen on to find out about her beautiful eyes! The original cast stars Mandy Patinkin, who is pretty fabulous in the role

Celebrating a Life
Whew, it has been a while since I've posted anything! Life has been a whirlwind.
1) Went to Boston for the annual SBL meeting, which was great.
2) While in Boston, received word that my aunt died
3) Had to make decision about whether go alter travel plans and go to home town to attend funeral
4) Ultimately decided not to go, and all agreed that Aunt Faye would want me to study hard and do well on my oral exams (which are on Tuesday)
My family celebrated the life of Aunt Faye today, and she was a remarkable woman. I did not know her well, but feel like I lost a kindred soul as we were the only two to agree on politics! I am sure I will be invoking her memory quite a lot in the upcoming years...I'll just say "Aunt Faye would agree with me!" to all ornery people.

Prayers this week
Many prayers requested this week! I have a Big Exam on Friday (a sit-down, timed, 5 hour exam) that is the last one like this in my program. But this is a minor concern compared to the three family members in the hospital. An aunt in the hospice program, a step-grandfather with stomach pains, and an uncle with heart blockage--yikes! All serious, two in the same hospital, and all far away from me.

Highs and Lows
I LOVE living on the West Coast, because the election was called so early that I still had time to do lots of studying! Let me hasten to add that I was too excited to actually study afterwards, though, but the point is I COULD have.
Today as I walked down the street, a homeless woman who lives in my neighborhood kept shouting "Yes we did! We did it!" as people walked by. She was completely infectious and people were smiling as they walked by her.
I am thrilled with the presidential choice, and have been reading many blogs, papers, and opinions over the past 24 hours. I know that many people are probably in pain over the country's decision, and that saddens me, because I have been there. One friend in particular and I are very far apart on the political spectrum, and she was sending me a bunch of email propaganda. So much that I had to ask her not to do so because it made me anxiety rise.
Yet I am sad by a proposition in my state that declared same sex marriages illegal. But this is one stumbling block, and I know that erosion of fear is slow...but that it will and can happen. My town was strangely subdued today--I expected cheering on the street, but instead people were freaked by the ban on same sex marriage. And while there were some people who were hateful--beyond hateful--in producing the ban, there were a lot of people who were honest, genuine people unmotivated by hate, but motivated by their particular values, which I try to respect.
Time for bed!

Friday 5!
I love doing Friday 5's late on Thursday!
And so I offer this Friday Five with 5 quick hit questions... and a bonus:
1) Your work day is done and the brain is fried, what do you do?
WATCH TV. Often I like to watch TV I've watched before, so I don't even have to think about it. Like....Buffy or BSG (bonus if you know what BSG stands for !)
2) Your work week is done and the brain is fried (for some Friday, others Sunday afternoon), what do you do?
I love to have a Saturday morning where I can do my facial routine. I like doing the whole shebang over a few hours. A scrub, a mask, plucking, buffing, everything. For some reason this is incredibly relaxing, and while my face is being energized, I energize the apartment by changing the sheets, making the bed, finishing up all dishes, etc. Weekends when I don't get to do this always throw me off! For some reason it's relaxing.
3) Like most of us, I often keep myself busy even while programs are on the tv. I stop to watch The Office and 30 Rock on Thursday nights. Do you have 'stop everything' tv programming or books or events or projects that are totally 'for you' moments?
I am desperately awaiting the arrival of season 3 of Big Love. I have to stop everything to see if Bill takes a 4th or not! If I am really, really into a new novel, I will stop everything to read it, which is dangerous when I should be, you know, writing a dissertation! I need brain candy a lot these days!
4) When was the last time you laughed, really laughed? What was so funny?
What a good question and I know I have really, really laughed recently, but can't pinpoint it! Two weekends ago, my beau and I were driving through a parking lot, and some women were sort of falling into a limo in front of us. They were dressed to the nines, and it was about 4:30 p.m., and they were carrying a lot of liquor out of Trader Joe's. It was just a funny scene, and we kind of looked at them bemusedly. Then we looked at the limo driver, who gave us this shrug, and perplexed "help me!" look that was soooo funny we laughed the whole way into the store. I hope he got tipped well--I have a feeling he had a long night ahead of him!
5) What is a fairly common item that some people are willing to go cheap on, but you are not.
Ooooh, I'm cheap on almost everything! The last thing I can think of is a bicycle helmet. I refused to get it at Wal-mart or Target, and paid probably 40% for it at a locally owned place where the people working there could help me pick out the right one for my head and the kind of bicycling I do. It was so worth it to me to get it from a locally owned place. But I'm not sure that's unusual among RevGals!
Bonus: It's become trite but is also true that we often benefit the most when we give. Go ahead, toot your own horn. When was the last time you gave until it felt good?
Oh no, I'm worried that it's so hard to think of! That's usually because I give til I grumble about it self-righteously...see the post right below this! Lots of self-righteous back pounding for myself about giving my time to cleaning out a church!

So busy! Good busy though!
Wow, when it rains it pours.
My church of the past five years is officially closed now. We have not been a worshiping community for a year and a half, but still a legal entity while we were in the process of selling the building. Yesterday the board president and secretary signed the papers that sell the building. I am happy, and not too sentimental, that the building is going to another denominationally affiliated organization, so it is 'staying' in the family so to speak. But for the past 2-3 weeks I have been in the building helping prepare it for the buyers. That means that I have been the main one, and other people have come and not come to help as it has pleased them! This is one way I know that the decision to close the church was correct--people loved the church but did not have the drive or heart to truly pitch in all their time and talents to assist with necessary details.
The bizarre part? I will most likely have a new job with the new buyers! So I'll be staying in the building (most likely).
The new church start I'm part of---which sprang from the old congregation---is also rapidly developing. Our pastor comes here a week from today to house hunt, then moves her permanently at the beginning of December, just in time for us to share Advent and Christmas together.
And I need to finish my comprehensive exams in three weeks.
Can anyone say busy? BUSY! But it's all GOOD BUSY!

Friday 5!
My favorite blog day of the week...Friday 5!
My daughter, her husband, and their toddler, Trinity Ann, are moving from Minneapolis, Minnesota to our place. It's a long story, but the short version is that they will be loading a Ryder truck on Saturday, and on Sunday afternoon we will unload it into a storage unit in our town. They will move themselves, their two cats and their BIG dog into our place. Yes, there will be issues, but this Friday Five isn't really about that. (Prayers for jobs for them and patience for all of us are most welcome, however.) This post is about locations. My husband has lived at 64 addresses in his life so far (16 with me) and he suggested the topic since we have moving trucks on our minds.
I have EXACTLY 5, so this works out well.
As a youth and young adult..
.
1) Shreveport, Louisiana: A decent place to grow up, and a much more fun place to visit now that I am grown. For those who may not know, Shreveport is now the third largest movie industry in the nation! I have seen several movie stars on visits there. Jessica Simpson, Andy Dick, Luke Wilson, and my friends have seen Diane Keaton among others.
2) Derry, N. Ireland: I spent one semester in N. Ireland in college. I loved it, and the hospitality of the Irish is legendary. I made lifelong friends there, and ten years later, two of us manage to scrape a few weekends together every year or two! This is a picture from one of the places we visited called the Giant's Causeway. Read about the legend here!
As an adult...
2) Evanston, IL: I LOVED the greater Chicago area. Yes, winters were cold, but I just put on a coat and made do just fine. I was in seminary there, and loved living near the city. Lots of people came to visit me when I lived there! Would love to return one day.
3) Arlington, VA: Living just a two minute drive from the nation's capital was really wonderful. I was only there for one year, and I would say my favorite thing about it was the Cherry Blossom Festival. The cherry blossoms are so special, and the whole city is alive with these tiny white blossoms, which were a gift from Japan, and there are festivals, parades (including a boat parade) and the weather is perfect. A close second that year was seeing Dolly Parton perform at the 4th of July on the capital lawn!
4) That-place-which-is-not-named in my blog! Suffice it to say I have lived here for 6 years now, the weather is perfect, I love the culture, and never want to leave!

Therefore, tell us about the five favorite places you have lived in your lifetime. What did you like? What kind of place was it? Anything special happen there?
If you have lived in less than five places, you can tell us a about fantasy location.
